Description:

Praziquantel is an effective anthelmintic or anti-worm medication which is used in treatment for most schistosome and many cestode infestations.

Praziquantel powder raw material will prevent newly hatched insect larvae (worms) from growing or multiplying in the system.

Praziquantel effects the permeability of the cell membrane resulting in the contraction of schistosomes. Praziquantel powder will further cause vacuolization and disintegration of the schistosome tegument. This effect is more marked on adult worms compared to young worms. An increased calcium influx will play a big role. Secondary effects of Praziquantel include inhibition of glucose uptake, lowering of glycogen levels and stimulation of lactate release. Please do note that the effect of praziquantel is limited very specifically to trematodes and cestodes; nematodes (including filariae) are not affected, it won’t work.

 

Praziquantel Mechanism of Action

Praziquantel causes severe spasms and paralysis of the worms' muscles. This effect is accompanied - and probably caused - by a rapid Calcium influx inside the schistosome. Morphological alterations are another early effect of praziquantel. These morphological alterations are accompanied by an increased exposure of schistosome antigens at the parasite surface. The worms will be either completely destroyed in the intestine or pass in the stool. The effective period can be 3-7 weeks. Glutathione S-transferase, which is an important detoxification enzyme in parasitic helminths, is the main vaccine target and a praziquantel target against schistosomiasis.
